"Wash A Million Hands!" project which started in 2010, achieved its goal in first 3 years. Here we report the results of the project as of December 2012.
Education for 1.2 million mothers
We are going ahead with the activities to make a opportunity for 1.2 million mothers in 40 districts who have under-5 years children to learn about handwashing using soap through a communication program or a personal interview by the end of 2012.
The activities of the handwashing ambassadors became fully in progress in 13,500 villages in 40 districts.
By the end of 2012, 6,715 ambassadors were trained in 13,500 villages in 40 districts. They are playing a role in informing the village people about the handwashing campaign for the first time.
Supported for installing hundreds of thousands of the home handwashing equipments.
The handwashing rate has increased to 27%.
Hundreds of thousands of the home handwashing equipments "Tippy Tap" were installed next to the toilet in the target districts by the end of 2012. The handwashing rate has increased to 27 % compared to 14 % in 2009.
354 handwashing tanks (60L) with stands and tubs were delivered and are used at 177 elementary schools in Gulu, Kitgum, Pader and Abim district.
Expand the handwashing campaign to estimated 3 million mothers by radio commercials and events on the world's handwashing day.
27 radio stations have cooperated with each other to spread a commercial of handwashing from 2010 through 2012. It is estimated that 3 million mothers who have under-5 years children (40%) get a opportunity to receive the message of handwashing using soap annually through the media campaign.
We also supported the events on the world's handwashing day on October 15, 2012. 12,282 adults and 7,487 children joined the event in each district.
